The Iron Horse Trail Overcrossing Project in San Ramon aims to enhance traffic flow and safety by creating a pedestrian bridge over Bollinger Canyon Road. The $29.1 million project is expected to be completed by August 2025.

The project's primary goal is to eliminate pedestrian-driver conflicts by removing the existing crosswalk, according to City Engineer Theresa Peterson. Implementation has been divided into four phases for better management and execution.

Funding sources include:

  • $2.5 million from city funds
  • $10.5 million in grants
  • Measure J advance funds

Between 2015-2018, the city engaged residents in selecting the final design from 21 different structural proposals. Construction began in 2020, with the community rejecting overly complex or artistic designs in favor of more practical options.

The current phase includes:

  • Basic frame construction
  • Irrigation system installation
  • Deck panel delivery
  • North side coping panel installation

The project has garnered support from the local community, including DVHS Social Studies teacher Jefferey Vangene, who believes it will significantly improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety. The overcrossing is particularly expected to benefit students walking home from school, addressing parents' safety concerns on the busy road.
