League of Legends' champion bounty system is facing criticism due to apparent inconsistencies in its implementation. A recent LEC Winter Split playoffs match between Karmine Corp and Vitality highlighted these issues.

In the match, K'Sante had a 153g bounty despite his team being at a significant disadvantage:

  • 4,000 gold deficit
  • Down 2 turrets
  • Behind 6 void grubs
  • 17 minutes into the game

The situation contradicts the bounty system's intended purpose, as enemy champions like Vi, Azir, and Braum had kills but no bounties. Former pro player Nemesis also reported similar issues, noting bounties on champions despite large team gold deficits.

Evolution of the Bounty System:

  • Original system: Bounties triggered after 3+ kills
  • 2018 update: Added minion and jungle monster gold to calculations
  • Patch 14.21: Changed to total gold earned/given calculation system

League gameplay designer Phreak acknowledged the issue, stating the displayed values were incorrect and promising to investigate. While some players suggest it's a spectator mode visual bug, others report experiencing similar issues in their games.

The current situation potentially prevents comeback opportunities and may actually help winning teams snowball their advantage further. Riot Games is aware of the problem and working on a solution to ensure the bounty system functions as intended.
