League of Legends Character Archive: Xerath, the Magus Ascendant
Xerath is an Ascended Magus of ancient Shurima, a being of pure arcane energy contained within a magical sarcophagus. Once a slave who became the trusted advisor to Emperor Azir, Xerath's ambition led him to betray his friend and steal the power of Ascension for himself, causing the fall of ancient Shurima.
Born into slavery around 3,000 years ago, Xerath's intelligence and literacy caught the attention of young Prince Azir. The two formed a close friendship, with Azir promising to eventually free all slaves. However, when Azir delayed this promise after becoming Emperor, Xerath began plotting against him.
Through years of studying forbidden magic, Xerath manipulated events to steal Azir's Ascension ritual for himself. This act destroyed Shurima and transformed Xerath into a being of pure magical energy. The Ascended warriors Nasus and Renekton managed to imprison him, though Xerath would spend millennia twisting Renekton's mind in their shared tomb.
When finally freed in the modern era, Xerath emerged as an immensely powerful but insane being. He now seeks to build a new empire in his image, seeing himself as a superior being meant to rule over all mortals. His abilities include:
- Mastery over multiple forms of magic, particularly dark sorcery
- Immunity to physical attacks (though his sarcophagus can be moved)
- Considered the most powerful Ascended in terms of raw magical power
- Must constantly control his energy to avoid "going nova"
Xerath currently rules from the ruins of Nerimazeth, gathering power while engaging in conflicts with other Ascended like the reborn Azir. His ultimate goal is to reshape the world according to his vision, unopposed by any who would stand in his way.
