Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Revives Classic JRPG World Map Exploration

Four characters in fantasy landscape
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is bringing back the beloved world map feature from classic JRPGs, as revealed during today's Xbox Developer Direct. This turn-based RPG with real-time battle mechanics features a star-studded cast including Charlie Cox, Jennifer English, Andy Serkis, and Ben Starr.

Ruined city in apocalyptic setting
The game implements a fully explorable overworld system reminiscent of 1990s Final Fantasy titles. Players can traverse this expansive map with their companion mount, Esquie, who can unlock abilities like flying for faster travel between areas. The world map isn't just for navigation - it features combat encounters, hidden secrets, and challenging boss battles.

Creature overlooking game world landscape
Sandfall Interactive has crafted a detailed world map filled with side paths and hidden levels, encouraging exploration and discovery. This return to classic RPG design promises to deliver the same sense of wonder and adventure that defined the genre's golden age.
The game launches on April 24 for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, PC, and will be available on Game Pass at release.
